Is school important in the design field?

Do you think getting a college degree in graphics design is important? Or do you feel that you can become a pro designer without taking 1 step in a classroom?

It is important to get a degree in graphics, why? You wont get hired without one by a professional company. If you and someone are going for a job, and he has a degree, and you dont, even if you can make great work, chances are HE will earn the job and not you.

Most companies around here have HORRIBLE posters and logos, I know I could make things 5x better, but the ones doing it have proof that they learned it and its on paper.

What about getting certificates instead of a college degree? I would think companies would rather hire a designer w/o a degree with the same skill level as a designer w/ a degree because they can pay him less money.

Wow this is a tough question.

I guess studies is required to a certain level just for that basic foundation.
But I guess thats only if you're really talented. Or not a degree would be recommended.

Or you can just be an unemployed, self-trained graphic designer.
