Forza Motorsport 2 -360

Every once in awhile a game comes along that is critic proof. It doesn’t matter if the game in question is good, great or horrible; it’s going to sell millions of copies because a year’s worth of hype has cemented that destiny. Forza Motorsport 2 is such a game. Fortunately, it lives up to expectations, though it falls short of the hype. Simply put, Forza 2 is a superb racing simulator that hardcore physics-freaks will proclaim as their new savior. Casual players with a passing interest in the genre will find much to enjoy as well. Those of you wanting to showcase the graphical prowess of your 360, however, are better off leaving Gears of War in the console

The surprisingly mediocre graphics may not mean much to the player base this game is directed towards. I suppose if you’re busy looking for individual blades of grass on the side of the road then you’re missing the point of Forza 2. It appears a trade-off had to be made between a tug-of-war game of physics versus fashion, and in this case, physics won. It’s the right call. There’s no shortage of brilliant-looking racing games on the 360 with plenty more on the near horizon, but there is now only one that can claim to have near-perfect physics. And I’m not talking about physics in the usual sense, as Forza 2 moves the concept up several notches, going so far as to include tire adhesion. It’s a safe bet that the majority of the 360’s processing power has been taken over by the physics engine.

If you’re one of those gamers who obsessively tweak every aspect of a virtual car in the attempt to shave 1/1,000,000 of a second from your lap time, then Forza was created for you. This is a game for people who have a slightly unnatural fixation with car performance, people with stacks of Car & Driver magazine hidden in a drawer as if it were pornography; and for some people, it is.
